Setting up your business

Updated

Everything IndieAM writes for you starts here. The more we know about your business, the more your posts will sound like you. You fill it in once, and you can change anything later.

What you told us when you requested access is already filled in: what your business does goes into your Business bio, and your website or social page is already ticked. Check it and add the rest.

The seven parts

Open Business info from the menu. You'll see a checklist of seven parts:

  1. Website & socials: where you'll post, the accounts you connect, your website and your business bio. See Website & socials.
  2. About the business: your bio, your industry, where you work, and what makes you different.
  3. Products & services: what you sell.
  4. Customers: the groups of people you sell to.
  5. Voice: how you sound.
  6. Goals: what you want marketing to do.
  7. Things to avoid: claims or topics to stay away from.

Tap Continue to go to the next one, or pick any part from the list. You can do them in any order, but the first two make the rest much quicker.

Each part is saved once you confirm it, so you can stop and pick up later, even on another device. Anything you haven't saved yet stays in that browser tab only.

You can skip a part for now. Campaign ideas unlock once all seven are done.

Let us read what's already there

Start with Website & socials. Tick where you'll post, add your website's address, connect the accounts you'd like us to read, and paste your business bio if you have one.

Tap Save and continue. We'll read your website, your bio and your last 20 posts on each account you connected, then fill in as much of About the business and Products & services as we can. If an account has nothing for us to read, we'll say so and carry on with the rest.

Some websites build their pages in your browser, so there's little for us to read from here. We read what we can find in the page, and when that isn't enough we'll say so. Paste the text from your homepage or About page into the Business bio box, tap Save and continue, and we'll read that instead.

Nothing we fill in is saved until you've checked it. Fix anything that's off, then save.

If a question is still blank, tap Help me answer this and we'll ask you a few short questions about just that one thing.

Drafts waiting for you

Once you save About the business, we get to work on the next parts in the background. When you open Customers, Voice and Goals, you'll usually find a draft waiting, so you only need to check it and change what doesn't fit. If one is still being written, you'll see a note, and it appears on its own a moment later.

Things to avoid is a short checklist you answer yourself.

Your voice

When we read your website or posts, your voice is drafted for you: check it, change anything that doesn't sound like you, and tap That's me. Not quite right? Tap Try the examples instead.

You can also tell us yourself:

  • Work it out from my website and posts: we use what we read in the first step (shown when there's something to use).
  • Paste something you wrote, like a caption, an email or your About page, then tap Use this.
  • Pick between examples: we show you two short captions at a time, and you choose which sounds more like you, a few times over.

Either way, you get a short description of your voice to tweak. When it sounds right, tap That's me.

Changing things later

Open Business info from the menu and open any part. Your changes shape everything we write from then on. Posts we've already written stay as they are.

Connected a new account, or changed your website? On Products & services, tap Read my website and posts again. We'll show you what we found next to what you have, and nothing changes until you save it.

Want a fresh take on your voice? On Voice, under Recreate your voice, tap Read my website and posts again or Answer a few questions. We'll show you the new voice in place of yours: tap Save to use it, or Keep mine to leave yours as it is.

Removing a product, customer group or goal

Removing one puts it away rather than deleting it:

  • Campaigns that already use it keep it.
  • New campaign ideas leave it out.
  • Ideas waiting on your list that were aimed at a removed customer group or goal are hidden until you bring it back.

To bring one back, tap Show removed at the bottom of that list, then Restore.

Once setup is done, you always need at least one of each, so the last one can't be removed. Add another first.

Your time zone

Your time zone is in Settings, from the menu. We use it for "today", deadlines, posting times, and when your reminders arrive. It was set from your browser when you created the business. If it's wrong, just change it there.
